Overview
A kind and generous family with two teenagers are seeking a full-time live-out governess for their younger child, age 13. The family has a nanny so this position is providing holistic and dedicated focus to the younger child, especially his mental well-being, academics, and socialization. In this role, the governess will be a confidante and mentor, guiding the child day to day. The child is verbal and can care for his basic needs himself. The schedule will be determined between the family and the governess, but the main times of need are week day afternoons/evenings, some weekends, and occasional mornings. The majority of care will be at the primary parent's residence on the Upper East Side though some care will be needed in Midtown at the other parent's home.
Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety and welfare of the child at all times
- Help with before school morning routine and afternoon/early evening routine and activities. The main support is needed after school: homework help, keeping track of academic performance, etc.)
- Comprehensive emotional support and encouragement, acting as a mentor and coach for the child day to day and especially in social situations
- Participate in regular team meetings with the therapy team, parents, and teachers
Qualifications
- Bilingual in another language other than English (French preferred but any additional language welcome)
- Interest in yoga, meditation, or mindfulness
- Active listener with proactive communication
- Strong situational awareness and able to maintain boundaries.
- Worldly and well read
- Calm, kind, wholesome presence which is the environment preferred by the family
- Team player who can coordinate with other household staff including nannies
Requirements
- Experience working with children who have special needs
- Be calm, patient, and warm with a positive, team-player attitude
- US passport, Green Card, or EAC
- Able and excited for travel including international during school breaks and over holidays
- Bachelor's degree or higher (Special education/psychology/early childhood education/social work/sociology/or humanities preferred)
- Discreet and protective of confidentiality
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record. There are additional residences in Connecticut and Upstate New York that the child will go to over some holiday weeks. Driving will be limited but required. Family car will be provided.
- Willing to update vaccinations as required for international travel (at family's expense)
- Non-smoker/vaper including during off time
