Overview
A warm, kind family who split their time between NYC (from Labor Day through the third week of June) and the Hamptons (from the third week of June through Labor Day) seek a phenomenal chef to join their family of four. This is a full-time role and will typically be Monday through Friday in NYC. Then the Summer schedule in the Hamptons will very much depend on the family’s plans, though it will definitively be the busiest period for the candidate, so candidates should expect to work longer hours/ weekends. Candidates will generally always receive 2 consecutive days off each week because it’s important to this family that candidates do not burn out. Private accommodation will be provided in the Hamptons, and candidates are welcome to bring their own families to stay during this time.
Responsibilities
- The principal’s cuisine preference is healthful, with limited seasoning or oils. Sometimes they may prefer vegan or dairy-free/ gluten-free, but always high protein (e.g. salmon) and they like to utilize local farm stands to get fresh produce.
- This is, for the most part, a fairly informal home, but presentation is extremely important to them - e.g. when they are entertaining, they appreciate items such as a beautifully curated crudités platter.
- Breakfast items can be left in the fridge, such as protein/ energy balls, muffins, overnight oats, zucchini bread etc
- Lunch can also be plated and left in the fridge, such as salads and soups, salmon fillets etc. - anything that’s healthy, keeps well, and that’s grab-and-go for the parents (the children, aged 9 and 11, eat lunch at school).
- Dinner should be plated but rarely served outside of the Summer months. The family tends to eat around 6:30pm in NYC, so candidates can expect a finish of around 8 pm each evening, once they have cleaned up the kitchen space (there is a dedicated Chef’s kitchen in both NYC and the Hamptons). Dinner will be a little later in the Summer months but there will only ever be a need to serve this if the family has guests to stay and/ or are entertaining, in which case there will be a bartender/ housekeeping staff on-hand to help. In general, the Chef should prepare something fresh in both NYC and the Hamptons, and then plate this and leave it to the side.
- The family hosts a Poker night once per month in the City and weekly in the Hamptons, so candidates should expect to finish closer to 10 pm on those evenings.
- In NYC, dinner should be prepared for 2 adults, 2 children, and 1 nanny. In the Hamptons, it will be a family of 4, plus 5 staff members (a nanny, 2 housekeepers, a handyman, and an estate manager).
- Summer is definitively the busy period, with much more entertaining and dinners for 10-15 heads at least 1 x per week.
- There are no dietary restrictions, though candidates should be able to accommodate these for guests. For the most part, everyone eats the same food, with a little tweak here and there for the children, when required, though they generally have extremely versatile palates.
- Though they are health conscious, poker nights will be a far more casual menu, such as mini burgers, chicken wings, meatballs etc. and they are not averse to mac and cheese or chicken tenders for the children from time to time.
- On occasion, the chef might be asked to prepare a meal or two for the family’s private jet (a driver will pick this up and deliver it to the crew), but this is currently being managed by a catering service.
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate will ideally have at least 10 years’ experience working in a private family and be attuned to preparing food for families with children, as well as for both casual and higher-end events - the whole gamut.
- This is a warm, kind, happy household and candidates absolutely must be positive, friendly team players - a harmonious, positive energy in the home is a top priority for the family (i.e. everyone leaves their problems at the door and works as a team).
Requirements
- US passport, Green Card or EAC
- Passport ready and willing to travel, if required
- Available to start ASAP
- Positive/ team player mentality
- Flexible and happy to commit to long hours at times throughout the year
Salary and Benefits
- $200-$250k+/ year + full family medical, dental, vision + 401k after 90 days of employment + unlimited PTO (to be taken outside of busy periods and coordinated with family's needs)
