Overview
A family of four, including a two and three year old, in San Francisco is seeking a chef with a genuine passion for food who can be creative in trying to prepare diverse foods that the kids will eat. The family loves farm-to-table cuisine, California organic, and farmer's market fresh food. They love ethnic foods (Asian, Eastern Mediterranean, Moroccan, and Persian) as well and often include cooked Chinese vegetables with dinner.
One parent is gluten and lactose sensitive and has a crustacean allergy. Adults prefer mostly protein and vegetables with minimal carbs. The children would generally eat the same food as the parents, with slight modifications (e.g., sans sauce or spicy/chili).
The schedule would be Monday through Friday with dinner at 6pm, which almost always concludes 30 minutes later. The arrival time would be as required to handle all the job responsibilities. The family’s house is in Mission District near Bart. Parking is mostly available for a midsize or smaller car. The kitchen is large, fully redone in 2022, and well provisioned (e.g., includes a steam over, two dishwashers, and a wood/natural gas Argentine grill).
Responsibilities
- Prepare, serve, and clean up after 5 dinners (Monday-Friday) per week, typically served at about 6pm
- Order and stock household with all groceries, wines, liquors, etc.
- Freezer prep (per week) 7 breakfasts for kids
- Prep in fridge on Fridays, 2 lunches and 2 dinners for weekends
- During school holidays when the family is in town, more lunches may be needed
- Prepare and maintain a collection of healthy snacks for the kids
- Maintain a small set of frozen “backup” meals (e.g., baked chicken wings, pasta) for the kids in the event they don’t like the main meal served.
- As needed, feed the family’s two dogs (border collie and labrador) their dinner
- The family currently hosts one larger group dinner (15-30 people) on the first Friday of each month between 5-7pm with friends and their children, though so far the food for that has been entirely ordered in
Qualifications
While not required, the ideal candidate would also:
- Have experience with Asian foods
- When the family travels (a couple weeks per year), be willing to arrange and brief a local chef at their destination
- Be willing to spend up to 5 hours per week doing some administrative tasks for the family (e.g., paying bills, liaising with occasional vendors and contractors)
Requirements
The chef would be responsible for weekly meal planning, keeping the kitchen clean (cleaning up after meals) and the occasional dinner party. Final clean up after some breakfasts may be needed (i.e., where parents triage, but don’t fully complete cleaning)
